The Combat in Makhachkala

Publication time: 16 January 2005, 15:06

On January 15, from early morning till late at night a hard combat has continued between a group of Dagestan Mujahiddeen and Russian special units “Alfa”, OMON, SOBR, supported with tanks and helicopters. According to Russian occupiers commandment, there are only 5 Mujahiddeen in the group.

Russian version of the combat beginning is the following. OMON (special militia military unit) unit tried to take by a sudden storm a Mujahiddeen group, located in one of the houses in the settlement Separatornyi. However, the hidden video cameras did not made it impossible. The Mujahiddeen met OMON with the automatic weapon fire. After that, militia and FSB units blocked the area of Mujahiddeen location.

Dagestan fighters attempted to break the ambience but failed, and barricaded themselves in two houses, in which they for some time had kept the inhabitants under their control and then let them go.

From than moment, i.e. from 5 a.m. on January 15, the siege of the two houses in the settlement Separatorny started and it has continued till now.

Events chronicle looks just about as following.

In the second half of the day, after long information silence Russian side reports the loss of one “Alfa” fighter and the injury of another one.

Further on:

„Kavkaz-Center“ source in Dagestan reported that about 5 p.m. local time militant helicopters had started assaulting the house in which Dagestan Mujahiddeen held the defense. At least one helicopter made a combat round. Local population is being urgently evacuated. Additional armored machines are being carried to the combat position.

The source reported that in the combat area, constant shots and explosions were to be heard. Thousand of Makhachkala citizens are gathering in groups in different parts of the city to discuss the happening events. “Kavkaz-Center” source has talked with many of them, who open sympathize the Mujahiddeen, calling them Shaheeds. Almost nobody speaks of “vakhkhabits”. Evident hostility to local authorities, especially to MVD and FSB, is felt in people talks. People publicly say that the liquidation of MVD and FSB people is retribution to “outlaws in law”

By 17.15, local time the shooting in the combat area has notably intensified.

Grenades explosions were heard.

Later on, „Kavkaz-Center“ source reported that in the evening Russian troops had delivered a heavy tank, most likely T-80.

The skirmish is going on. From time to time, the houses are fired. Then, the silence comes. After the first shooting, the militant helicopter flew up to the houses and then flew several times around them (evidently for reconnaissance).

On one minaret tower, not far from the mosque, “Alfa” sharpshooters have settled down and are volleying the Mujahiddeen from that place. This fact caused sharp negative reaction among the people, who went home when the darkness broke, in fear the clashes spread out all over the city.

Meantime, the local television gives no information on the combats in Makhachkala. Dagestan TV

Presents non-stop concerts. People are extremely discontent. The combat in the Republic capital has lasted already 14 hours. Within this time, pro-Mujahiddeen attitudes have definitely increased in Makhachkala, especially among the young people. They openly sympathize with Dagestan Mujahiddeen and worry about them. These facts were reported by “Kavkaz-Center” source, who had personally visited the combat position and talked with people.

About 8 p.m., the source of “Kavkaz-Center” reported that in the encirclement area, not far from the place of the 15-hours lasting combat, a big group of young people had gathered. Huge clouds of smoke are rising over the combat place.

At 19.30, Makhachkala TV gave miserable information with the demonstration of a burning house. The shots from large caliber machine guns and grenade guns have been still heard. Makhachkala TV promises to give more detailed picture of the events only in the night news. The hard combat has continued as before.

About 20.30 Russian TV channel RTR reported that fire intensity from the Mujahedeen side had decreased. The analysts supposed the Dagestans were saving ammunition.

About 22.00  Russian information sources reported that the tank had totally destroyed the house with the Degaestan Mujahiddeen. No other details were reported. Occupiers’ commandment informed they intended to complete the action against the Mujahedeen by the morning of January 16. At 21.50 the skirmish in the combat area was still going on.

„Kavkaz-Center“ source reported that about 22.30, local time, the representative of Dagestan Ministry for Home Affairs Abdulmanal Masaev showed up on the local television and declared that the combat in the settlement Separatorny was over. The MVD representative announced all the Mujahiddeen in the house were dead.  However, he gave no real facts to prove his words.

Kavkaz-Center“ source confirmed that approximately by 22.10 the fire in the settlement Separatorny area had stopped. He also reported that earlier the tank had been conducting a direct aiming fire towards the house, which was as a result of this heavy gunning destroyed up to the ground.

Dagestan television has also demonstrated a report on the combat in the settlement. On video sequence there were to see a hard skirmish, a patrolling helicopter and a burning building, as well as a shooting tank. The storm of the house, in which Dagestan Mujahiddeen were holding the defence, continued from 5 a.m. till 10 p.m. on January 15.

As the source of „Kavkaz-Center“ stated, neither TV, nor representatives of the authorities said anything about the Mujahiddeen nationality. It is plainly visible that mass media are trying to conceal the information of these events.

There is one more noticeable peculiarity of that day: it was seen that the townspeople had evidently treated the Mujahiddeen with sympathy.
