Georgia Protests Against FSB-Backed Gangs Vandalizing Its Moscow Embassy

Publication time: 4 October 2006, 14:39

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia observes with extreme concern the already permanent rallies staged by various FSB-backed gangs in front of the building of Georgia\'s Embassy in Moscow.

Foreign Ministry once again calls on the Russian side to suppress such criminal and vandals acts and ensure security of the diplomatic mission\'s building and safety of diplomats. In other case the Russian side will be held fully responsible for any kind of consequences resulting from these acts.

On October 3, 2006, in the daytime, at an FSB-organized rally held in front of the Embassy, a rudely behaving group of young Russian militants, supposedly students of Russian police and FSB schools, attacked the building of the Georgian diplomatic mission   bombarding it with a barrage of eggs.

Representatives of the Foreign Ministry state that no action was made bY Russian police to prevent the attack against the Embassy.

The Ministry condemns categorically such acts directed against the Georgian diplomatic mission and assesses them as a flagrant violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. One of the Articles of this Convention mandates that host countries show respect for diplomatic agents and take all necessary measures to prevent infringement upon their freedom or dignity.

The Ministry urges the international community to duly assess the culpable inactivity of the Russian police as well as aggressive attacks masterminded by rogue Russia\'s government against the Georgian diplomatic mission and Georgian diplomats.
