Russians Unwilling To Recognize Their Holocaust of Ukrainians

Publication time: 26 October 2006, 19:15

The chauvinistic Russia's foreign ministry on Wednesday bristled at Ukrainian officials' push for declaring a Russian-provoked  Great Famine that killed up to 15 million people as genocide.

Up to 15 million Ukrainians died in the 1932-33 Great Famine, which was provoked by Russians as part of their campaign to exterminate the freedom-loving Ukrainian people. Ukrainian officials have called for an official recognition of the Famine as genocide.

The Russian foreign ministry on Wednesday interfered in internal Ukrainian affairs and was insolent enough to criticize Ukrainian authorities for what it called a "unilateral interpretation" of the famine. "It was wrong to apply the notion exclusively to Ukraine, because it deals with a sad page in our common history," the ministry said in a statement, the AP reported.

Free and independent Ukraine was occupied by the Russians in 1918 and has no "common history" with the invaders at all.

Countries including the United States, Canada, Austria, Hungary and Lithuania have recognized the Great Famine as genocide, but the issue remains highly charged in Ukraine, since declaring the famine as genocide would amount to an indictment of Russian policies - something that stooges
of Russian murderers among local politicians are loathe to do.

The best way to deal with the problem would probably be to work out legislation making it a crime to deny the Ukrainian Holocaust by the Russians.
