Nuclear Emergency Reported At Russia's Chernobyl Near Finnish Border

Publication time: 29 October 2006, 17:34

A power unit remains unoperational at the Leningradskaya nuclear power plant near the Finnish border and Russia's second largest city of St. Petersburg after Saturday's emergency shutdown, according to Russian press reports.

Nuclear power plant  reactor No.2 was stopped after an emergency shutdown of its two turbo generators due to a 350-KV high-voltage cable short circuit, which the operating company said was caused by heavy winds.

Rosenergoatom said the reactor was working in a test mode after an overhaul  in mid-October.

"An emergency situation was caused by a storm which hit the region," the spokesman said.

The company alleged in a statement that  radiation at the plant and surrounding areas was "normal".

As of press time, no independent confirmation of these claims was receceived from Finland's radiation monitoring stations.

If heavy fall winds continue in the region, another Chechnobyl disaster seems to be possible at this junk  Russian nuclear power plant.
