Dutch Tortured Iraqi Prisoners

Publication time: 18 November 2006, 16:59

Dutch soldiers in Iraq tortured dozens of Iraqi prisoners during interrogations in November 2003, and their officers covered up the abuse.

A press report said in Amsterdam Friday that they were doused with water to keep deprive them of sleep, exposed to extremely unpleasant sounds and refused permission to speak to a lawyer.

The Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant said lieutenant Luuk Kroon, the officer in charge of the Dutch torturers, failed to report the incidents to judicial authorities even though he knew about them in early November 2003.

The Netherlands sent about 1,400 occupation troops to southern Iraq, the IRIB reported.
