Adults in Russia
overwhelmingly pick their president as the main political figure of the year,
according to a poll by the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center. 76 per
cent of respondents think Vladimir Putin was the politician of 2006.
Liberal Democratic Party (LDPR) leader Vladimir
Zhirinovsky was a distant second with 13 per cent, followed by deputy prime
minister Dmitry Medvedev with 12 per cent, and defence minister Sergei Ivanov
with six per cent. Support is lower for emergencies minister Sergei Shoigu,
Communist Party (KPRF) leader Gennady Zyuganov, prime minister Mikhail Fradkov,
Russian Federation Council chairman Sergei Mironov, State Duma speaker Boris
Gryzlov and Moscow
