Outbreak begins & KC reports from the ground

Publication time: 8 January 2007, 12:56

Armed men have attacked Ethiopian occupation soldiers in Somalia's capital Mogadishu, residents said.

Hundreds of troops loyal to the puppet "transitional government" patrolled the streets on Sunday where a day earlier crowds had hurled stones and burnt tyres to demonstrate against the forces that ousted the Islamic courts.

In the second day of violence in Mogadishu, Somali fighters opened fire on Ethiopian occupation forces backing the so call "interim government".

Al Jazeera's correspondent in the Somali capital, said: "Gunmen attacked one of the Ethiopian troop bases in Mogadishu with machineguns and lobbed grenades.

"The gunmen, who were said to be in two vehicles, attacked with machineguns and lobbed grenades and, according to witnesses, also used anti-tank missiles.

"A 13-year-old girl is said to have died after getting caught in the crossfire. And a man is now recuperating in a Mogadishu hospital after being injured."

Also on Sunday, in the south-central town of Baladweyne, hundreds of people took to the streets demanding that Ethiopian occupation troops free a military commander detained for refusing to hand over an Islamic courts member despite a puppet "government" so call "amnesty offer" to the defeated movement.

Meanwhile, KC source reported: Around 8.30 pm on Sunday, gunmen attacked Ethiopian occupation troops in Mogadishu, fierce fighting which lasted for 15 minutes erupted in the K4 district of the city which is one of the few ethiopian camps in the city. The casualties is yet to be reported but witness state that it involved over 60 ethiopian troops on trucks who were ambushed by militia attacking them with bombs and small arms burning down the trucks and causing many casualties.

For the first time since the fall of Mogadishu KC have managed to speak to several Islamic associates inside the city and gathered information indicating the Islamic troops are still inside the city with protection from their clan members.

Most of the Mogadishu based Islamic troops returned to their city after the fall, ethiopian occupation troops are concentrated in the airport, sea port and 2 military camps inside the city but none inside the town neighborhoods enabling the Islamic force to return and move freely in their clan based neighborhoods. Many of the Mujahiddeen and tribal militia vowed to attack the tigray if they moved in their respective clan based districts. A former Ifka Halne Islamic courts militia trainer was gunned down in front of his house at night by unknown gunmen possible by the weak puppet "government" and warlord agents.

In a Tribal politics more complicated than Iraq. Somalians would never recognise any government unless their tribes are running it. This was proven by yesterdays capture of the head of Islamic Courts in the Hiiraan region. Sheikh Faarah Ma'allin Mahamud was captured in a village close the the Beletweyn  the provisional capital of the region and brought to the central puppet "police station", when tribal elders heard of the capture some marched to the puppet administration and threatened tribal feuds within 1 hour the Sheikh was release and was at his own house in the town with the puppet troops given him protection.

Outraged tigray troops arrest the puppet army head and took him away to their side of the Broder when he refused to hand the Sheikh over sparking a riot inside the city, a curfew was imposed since.

Further south Kenyan police "captured" Omar Adaani the businessman who funded the Islamic Courts, contrary to what the press report of his capture. The tribal elders confirmed that he was comfortably staying in another business man's house who share clan relations in Kenya, before he went to the local police station to report him self in no charges was brought against him yet.

Disarmament failed

Puppet "government" plans to disarm the country failed as clan elders vowed no to hand over their weapon until a "trusted' leader is in place. Clans in Mogadishu and further south of the country are sworn enemy with the warlord turned 'presidents' clan in the north east and fear that if the weapons are handed over the 'president' would handed to his clan and try to monopolies the power in the country.

To prevent this all 7 most powerful clan based warlords returned to the city by the request of the clan elders to prevent the "government" from taking over their districts and weapons.
