Stating that the Iranian people and the government do not wish their nuclear activities to boost international tension, Iran's Ambassador in Ankara Ghulam Reza Bagheri evaluated the reports on Israel's possible assault against Iran and said that, "If an attack happens, we will not just sit and watch."
Ambassador Bagheri paid a courtesy visit to Today's Zaman Ankara Representative Kerim Balcı in his office. Assessing the recent developments, Bagheri claimed that in conducting their nuclear activities they had no intention of increasing international tension.
Recalling newspaper reports about Israel's possible attack against Iran, Bagheri said, "I don't think that they will make this kind of mistake while thinking of their own existence." Bagheri warned the Israeli government and noted that "Israelis should not expect us to sit and watch if their attack happens."
Giving information on Iran's nuclear activities Bagheri recalled the presence of a fatwa (religious order in Iran) saying "weapons of mass destruction are sin." Bagheri went on to say that "Not the US nor Israel should produce this kind of weapons. Our belief condemns weapons of mass destruction and considers them as sin. We cannot accept this sin upon us. We don't have weapons of mass destruction and we do not think that having weapons of mass destruction is legitimate. Our aims are to use the nuclear power to generate energy. Iran is a member of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The level of supervision made by the IEAE in Iran is not being done in any other country. We want to be independent."
Defining Turkish diplomacy as multidimensional, Bagheri said: "We understand Turkey's stance. And we also believe that Turkey is very close friend of Iran."
