Iraqi puppet “vice president” hurt in blast

Publication time: 26 February 2007, 16:17

Operations of retaliation by mujahideen continues to sweep Baghdad where an Iraqi puppet vice president has escaped an apparent assassination attempt, while the US military says it has found further evidence of Iranian-made weapons being used by Iraqis fighting American troops.

US officers said on Monday that the findings included components to build sophisticated roadside bombs.

They said that the weapons, including mortar bombs and rockets, were found during a raid by US forces and Iraqi police near the city of Baquba on Saturday.

The announcement on Monday came as a blast inside an Iraqi ministry building in Baghdad killed at least 10 people and injured 31 others,- Jazeera reported.

Adel Abdul-Mahdi, a Shia and one of Iraq's two puppet vice presidents, suffered bruises and was taken to a hospital to be examined, an aide said.

A senior political source said that Abdul-Mahdi was taken to hospital for "routine checks" after suffering minor wounds in the blast.

"We know he has been sent to hospital but it's a natural checkup," the source, from Iraq's "governing" Shia Alliance, told Reuters.

Two "police" sources said it was unclear what caused the blast.
