Heavy fighting erupts in Mogadishu

Publication time: 6 March 2007, 19:10

Mojaheds have attacked the Somali puppet "interim government" and their Ethiopian bloody allies hours after mortar attacks were aimed at Ugandan so-called "peacekeepers" who had just landed in Mogadishu.

At least two civilians were killed when more than 100 fighters attacked the government base at the former defence headquarters in Mogadishu, a local reporter said.

"They are fighting with rocket-propelled grenades and heavy machine guns," said the reporter, who was trapped by the gunfire at a nearby hospital.

A contingent of about 350 Ugandan infidels had landed just hours before, the first occupants- "peacekeepers" to enter the city in more than a decade.

The AFP news agency reported a total of three dead in the attack on the base.

Mohamed Ismail, a garage owner who lives near the compound, told the agency: "Three people were killed. One civilian and two gunmen were  killed during the shoot out."

Khadra Aden, a Mogadishu resident, confirmed the killings occured near the heavily fortified base.

Aden said: "I have seen two gunmen killed and they were collected for burial by other gunmen. A civilian was also killed."

Ahmed Balbal, a trader, said: "Six people were wounded in the shoot out. Two were mojahedss and the other four were civilians."

Witnesses said the clashes started after gunmen attacked the base using heavy machine guns, prompting the forces to respond with heavy artillery fire.
