Pakistan: Blast strikes Lahore police base

Publication time: 11 March 2008, 10:17

At least 15 people have been killed and many more injured in two explosions in the Pakistani city of Lahore, police say. One blast hit the headquarters of the Federal Investigations Agency, Pakistan's equivalent of the FBI, on Tuesday morning.

The second blast was at a residential compound elsewhere in the city.

The eight-storey agency building was ablaze, badly damaged and left in an unstable condition.

Al Jazeera's Pakistan correspondent, Kamal Hyder, said the explosion at the police headquarters was significant as it came less than a week after a suicide attack at the naval college in Lahore.

In the attack on the compound, two children died, a city administrator said.

Police said the full cause of the blasts was yet to be ascertained. Unconfirmed reports said the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber. If confirmed, it would be the fifth such attack on the city in the past 12 months.

Kwwaja Naseer of Waqt TV, told Al Jazeera: "It was a very, very horrible scene."

The road outside had been packed with commuters and the blast caused gas-powered vehicles to explode, further hampering rescue efforts.

Hyder said reports were coming through that the attack on the suburb of New Town had been carried out with a vehicle packed with explosives.

"It was well co-ordinated. The death toll is steadily rising.

"It points to a total failure of the security apparatus that these attacks happened."
