SCANDAL. Turkish PM's wife not allowed into military hospital

Publication time: 4 February 2010, 15:45

During a television discussion with newspaper editors Saturday, Turkey's prime minister complained about the treatment his wife had received when she tried to enter a military hospital while wearing a headscarf.

While answering questions from the editors in chief, Erdošan said his wife, Emine Erdošan, tried to visit Nejat Uygur, a veteran actor with dementia, in the hospital three years ago but was not permitted entry.

Erdošan was barred entry because Uygur was undergoing treatment at a military hospital and she was wearing a headscarf, the prime minister said, adding that hospital officials had said it would be better for her not to enter the facility.

The prime minister said he criticized the hospital's attitude to the highest authorities.

Necla Uygur, the actor's wife, spoke to the media after the incident, confirming the event. Uygur said she and the prime minister's wife had met outside the hospital and were both upset by the situation. "Let the prime minister and the military evaluate the situation between themselves," she said. "I, as a soldier's bride, do not find such a thing elegant."
