Syrian freedom fighters seized control of a border crossing on the frontier with Turkey and pulled down the Assad regime flag on Wednesday.
Syrians on the Turkish side of the border celebrated and yelled, "I am a free Syrian!". People are moving freely across the border, crawling under barbed wire.
There were fierce clashes on Tuesday as freedom fighters and illegal Alawite regime forces fought for control of the Tal Abyad crossing.
Syria's freedom fighters control several other border crossings into Turkey but it was the first time they took the border area in the northern province of Raqqa.
Meanwhile, in Damascus freedom fighters withdrew from three areas of the capital due to a lack of ammunition. The areas, Hajar al-Asswad, al-Qadam and Asseil, were also under a tight Alawite army siege as they were struck by air bombardment and Russian tank shelling.
